Doctor's Appointments & Mobility Issues
Today I took the boys for their annual Well-Baby Check-Ups. For those who like these things, here are the stats:
Elliot weighs 29 1/2 pounds and is 39 inches tall. He is in the 75%.
Vincent weighs 22 pounds and is 30 inches tall. He is in the 50%. (Elliot at 1 year weighed 23 pounds and was 29 inches tall - pretty similar!)
The doctor gave both boys a good bill of health and was impressed with Elliot's vocabulary. However, there was the exception of a developmental referral for Vincent because of his lack of mobility. The doctor took an x-ray of his hips to see if that was an issue, and everything is ok.
Here is where Vincent stands with the so-called mobility issue: he doesn't crawl/just scoots backwards on his belly, he doesn't pull himself up, he doesn't "cruise" along furniture, and he doesn't go from a lying down position to a sitting position. However, he does walk while holding on to someone's fingers and absolutely loves to do that every chance he gets. He rides the tractor and fire engine and can move these vehicles all over the yard by himself. And he will stand along furniture by himself, but is cautious about doing so if you take your hands off.
Neither Martin or I want to follow through with the referral for a developmental specialist since the x-ray came out alright and in all the other areas Vincent has been on target developmentally. So, what do you all think? Is there anything we can do to encourage Vincent's mobility? We tend to think he's just a bit delayed in this area and will sooner or later (hopefully sooner) prove himself quite capable of moving on his own, and then it won't take him long to catch up to others in his age group when it comes to gross motor skills.

"Happy Birthday Dear Vincent...."
He shared a birthday pumpkin pie with Aunt Anita and was quite fascinated and simultaneously perplexed by the dot of whipped cream on her nose.
Excited over his tricycle - he immediately made a motor noise when he saw what was underneath the white sheet wrapping.
Celebrating on his official Birth Day...cutie!
He loves lights and candles. But alas, he was too full to even be tempted by the cake and ice-cream for desert. He actually picked out all the broccoli on his plate and ate that before the chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese.
His gracious older brother.
Time for presents.
For his first birthday....
He celebrated a joint Anita/Philip/Betsy party with his Rhodes grandparents and aunts and uncles on Saturday night, his Witmer grandparents and aunts, uncles, and cousins on Sunday, and his parents and brother on Monday. Quite the extended birthday celebration for a one-year-old little boy! His gifts included a tricycle, yogurt, bananas, clothes, a swing, train, truck, and a wooden push duck.
Some of the things we especially love about Vincent:
-his passion!!!
-his laugh
-his imitation of noises and movements - you should see his motorcycle imitation
-his playfulness and sense of humor
-his wild hair!
-etc, etc.
